]]>The post Security Update: Protecting Against the LiteSpeed Cache WordPress Plugin Compromise appeared first on GreenGeeks Blog.
]]>The active LiteSpeed Cache exploit affects over five million websites worldwide, including many hosted at GreenGeeks. GreenGeeks utilizes LiteSpeed Cache across our EcoSite and Reseller network, which includes the use of the WordPress LiteSpeed Cache plugin.
Even if you’re not an expert web developer, it’s important to understand the implications of this compromise and the steps we’ve taken to safeguard your websites.
The LiteSpeed Cache Plugin is a very popular plugin designed for caching and optimizing a WordPress website. Unfortunately, every software has vulnerabilities, and the LiteSpeed Cache Plugin is no exception.
When something is this popular, the criminal element will do what they can to exploit it. There is no such thing as a completely “fool-proof” system.
This past week, a security flaw, identified as CVE-2024-28000, was discovered within the plugin’s codebase. This plugin is vulnerable to a privilege escalation exploit in all versions up to, and including, 6.3.0.1.
This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to spoof their user ID to that of an administrator, and then create a new user account with the administrator role utilizing the REST API endpoint.
It is critical to note that this vulnerability affects older versions of the affected plugin, and updating to the latest version is crucial for protection. It’s always a good idea to make sure all of your plugins, themes, and WordPress core files are updated.
Simply put, GreenGeeks takes your website security seriously!
Even though we’re not a fully managed WordPress hosting provider, GreenGeeks takes proactive action in these cases of severe vulnerabilities to protect our clients and the security of our network.
In this case, we’ve already taken corrective action for all of our impacted customers across our EcoSite and Reseller platforms. This involves updating the LiteSpeed Cache plugin to the newly patched version as needed.
While we have updated the LiteSpeed Cache plugin on our network as a courtesy, you must remain proactive in securing your website.
In most cases, the best defense is keeping your software up to date. Simply updating to the latest version available from the official WordPress repository will patch the vulnerabilities and enhance the security of your website.
The best way to keep your site up to date is by using the WordPress automatic update system within wp-admin, bypassing the need for any 3rd party software. You can also easily manage your WordPress installations and automatic updates using Softaculous. This can be done from within your GreenGeeks cPanel account.
At GreenGeeks, we prioritize the security of our clients, and we strive to help you stay informed and secure of potential security threats to ensure your peace of mind.
Although we’ve taken the critical steps to update impacted sites using the LiteSpeed Cache plugin and remove the vulnerability, we encourage you to update all other software installed within your GreenGeeks account. This includes ensuring all passwords have been updated to maintain the overall security of your hosting account.
Remember, staying vigilant about vulnerabilities and keeping your software up to date is crucial for a safe online presence.
If you have any questions or concerns about this vulnerability or its impact on your GreenGeeks Account, please don’t hesitate to contact the GreenGeeks Technical Support Team for assistance.

]]>The post The Truth and the Problems of “Warm Up” Emails appeared first on GreenGeeks Blog.
]]>While this practice can be beneficial for individual users, it poses significant issues in a shared web hosting environment.
Firstly, sending automated “warm up” emails can quickly consume server resources. Shared hosting environments are designed to efficiently allocate resources among many users.
When one user sends a large volume of automated emails, it can lead to server overloads, affecting the performance of other users’ websites and email services. This not only degrades the quality of service but also increases the risk of server downtime.
Secondly, the nature of “warm up” emails can trigger spam filters. These emails are often repetitive and lack engagement, which are key indicators of spam.
When multiple accounts on a shared server engage in this behavior, it can result in the server’s IP address being blacklisted. This impacts all users sharing the same IP, leading to widespread email delivery issues and potential damage to reputations.
It must also be noted that there is no need to send “warm up” emails from a GreenGeeks EcoSite or Reseller service, as both of these platforms utilize shared IP addresses, which already have an established, credible reputation.
Thus, attempting to send automated warm up emails can inadvertently negatively affect your sending reputation.
Finally, automated email-sending services can violate the GreenGeeks Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy. GreenGeeks maintains strict email usage policies to prevent abuse and ensure fair resource distribution.
Services like mailwarm, mailreach, and instantly.ai can easily exceed these limits, leading to policy violations that can result in account suspension or termination.
Recognizing these issues, GreenGeeks has implemented measures to block and filter out “warm up” emails from being sent through our servers. This proactive approach helps maintain optimal server performance, ensures fair resource allocation, and protects the reputations of all our users.
By preventing automated emails from flooding our systems, we can provide a more reliable and secure hosting environment for everyone.
While “warm up” emails may seem like a good strategy for individual email marketers, they pose significant risks in a shared hosting environment.
At GreenGeeks, we are committed to protecting our users from these risks by blocking and filtering out such emails, ensuring a better experience for all our customers.

]]>The post Understanding the BackupBuddy WordPress Plugin Exploit appeared first on GreenGeeks Blog.
]]>This flaw allowed attackers to access backup files containing sensitive data like database credentials and user information.
Additionally, BackupBuddy has since changed ownership to a new parent company and changed its name to Solid Backups, making previous versions of BackupBuddy deprecated.
While this compromise was initially found in 2022, GreenGeeks and other web hosting providers have experienced an increase in attacks that are targeting this plugin, requiring a permanent solution to this threat to prevent additional exploits of data.
The Wordfence Threat Intelligence team discovered the vulnerability, which permitted unauthenticated users to download arbitrary files from affected servers. After responsibly disclosing the issue to iThemes, the plugin’s developers, a patch was quickly released.
Wordfence published an advisory urging immediate updates to mitigate risks.
Web hosting providers, especially those offering shared hosting, faced significant challenges. Shared hosting environments are particularly susceptible to cross-site contamination.
Providers had to disable and remove the BackupBuddy plugin since it is a premium plugin that they couldn’t update on behalf of users. They informed clients about the issue and recommended downloading the patched version directly from iThemes.
BackupBuddy’s method of storing backup files posed additional problems for shared hosting environments, which typically do not allow extensive storage. The plugin’s storage-intensive operations could degrade performance and increase data exposure risks.
Hosting providers often prohibit storing large backup files on shared servers and recommend alternative solutions that use secure, offsite storage.
GreenGeeks does not allow the storage of large backup files on EcoSite or Reseller servers. We recommend alternative backup solutions that either store backups offsite or use more secure and resource-efficient methods.
For instance, UpdraftPlus will allow you to store backups on cloud servers such as Drop Box and Google Drive for free.
GreenGeeks also offers nightly backups of all EcoSite and Reseller accounts. Storing additional backups within your account(s) can delay our backup process, causing a lapse in the data we retain.
The BackupBuddy exploit underscores the importance of regular security audits and updates for WordPress plugins. Site administrators should:
The CVE-2022-31474 vulnerability in BackupBuddy highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in website security. Regular updates, proper storage practices, and robust security measures are essential for protecting websites.
The collaborative efforts of security researchers, plugin developers, and hosting providers were crucial in addressing this vulnerability, emphasizing the importance of proactive cybersecurity practices.
For detailed information, refer to the official Wordfence advisory and the CVE database entry for CVE-2022-31474. These resources offer comprehensive insights into the BackupBuddy exploit and the steps taken to address it.

]]>This year, GreenGeeks will also be there in person. Please stop by and chat with Anna, Ericka, Marco, and Trey as they are always eager to answer questions and interact with camp goers.
For us, the interactions we have with others at the camp are one of the biggest highlights.
As always, there are so many interesting talks happening at WordCamps. It’s often exceptionally difficult to pick a few, not to mention how some of them run at the same time.
Still, let’s take a look at some of the ones that stand out most to me.
If you’re looking to get more out of the WordPress experience and are in the Phoenix area, this WordCamp is sure to be informative. There is so much you can do with the platform whether you’re building a blog or a business site.
This is especially true when you consider the impact of artificial intelligence. And although I don’t condone using AI for generated content, there is still a great deal it can do to help you build a great website.
For one thing, AI can crunch data far faster than you can with a spreadsheet.
Phoenix has a lot going on. Its amenities rank the city at number 11 in the world for weather and attractions. While you’re there attending the WordCamp, why not take an extra day and check out the scenery?
So, what kinds of things pique my interest in this amazing city?
This is an extremely short list of the attractions in Phoenix. You could spend weeks exploring everything the city has to offer.
This year’s WordCamp has a lot of great talks happening, and there is something for everyone. That’s one of the great things about the WordPress community; we’re always looking to help regardless of your skill level.
Enjoy the weekend, and don’t forget to stop by and say hi to Anna, Marco, Ericka, and Trey at our table.
I’d like to end this by giving thanks to the sponsors, organizers, speakers, volunteers, and patrons. Your support is what makes WordCamps like these an incredible experience.
We’ll see you in Phoenix!

]]>And I have to say, I am somewhat jealous. There is so much history to absorb and so many amazing attractions both at the WordCamp and in Spain, generally speaking.
This year, the WordCamp is held a the Etopia Centro de Arte y Tecnologia (Etopia Center of Art and Technology). It’s located just a short distance from the Ebro River and conveniently located near the Zaragoza-Delicias train station.
Aside from the amazing location, there are a variety of sessions available at the WordCamp this year. Like most other camps, it’s difficult to decide which ones are of top priority.
That’s perhaps the most challenging part of attending these camps. Which talks do you want to attend in person when some of them are at the same time on different tracks?
Well, here are some of the talks that pique my interest most:
This is just a short list of some of the awesome talks that are going on during this year’s WordCamp in Zaragoza. And to top it all off, there are games and gifts from various sponsors to close the camp in addition to the scheduled After Party.
It’s sure to be a great time for all those who attend.
If you’re in Europe or are planning to travel to Spain for the WordCamp, be sure to embrace everything the location has to offer. Keep in mind that Spain, itself, has a very long and rich history.
So, what are some of the attractions in the Zaragoza area? Well…
I could spend days going over everything available in the area. And if you’re visiting for the WordCamp, I do hope you set aside some time to see some of the spectacular elements of Spain.
After all, some of the tours are only a couple of hours out of your day. Why not?
While at the WordCamp, don’t forget to stop by and say hi to Marco. He’ll be at our GreenGeeks table ready to answer questions or just to hang out and talk about WordPress in general.
I’d like to take this moment to thank all of the sponsors, organizers, volunteers, and patrons who made WordCamp Zaragoza happen this year. It’s your support that makes these camps worthwhile and why WordPress has one of the best communities on Earth.
Enjoy the weekend in Zaragoza and don’t forget to take a few moments to breathe in the atmosphere. It’s an awe-inspiring location with plenty of history to uncover.

]]>The post Legacy DNS: End of Life appeared first on GreenGeeks Blog.
]]>Using Anycast allows higher performance, decreased latency, and scaling across multiple locations, better meeting our customers’ needs.
Our new nameservers, which are Anycast-enabled are as follows:
On September 30th, GreenGeeks will shut down our legacy DNS infrastructure and will make default the Anycast-enabled nameservers.
The legacy nameservers, with the IP addresses listed below, will no longer respond after September 30th:
GreenGeeks has already re-directed the legacy nameserver aliases to the Anycast DNS cluster and automatically adjusted domains registered through the GreenGeeks registrar to the Anycast NS.
Domains registered through third-party domain registrars need to be updated manually.
Although the legacy nameserver aliases will continue to work after the nameserver shutdown, GreenGeeks strongly recommends updating all nameservers to the Anycast DNS to avoid mismatches between the backend nameservers & the domain registrar.
For users with private vanity nameservers under non-GreenGeeks domains, you’ll need to adjust the IP address assigned to each nameserver to match those provided below:
Private vanity nameserver adjustment is a two-step process involving registering the IP address for each nameserver with the domain registrar and updating the corresponding A record within the GreenGeeks DNS zone. For more info about private nameservers, refer to our support article on Setting up Private Nameservers

]]>This year, our team members Ericka Barboza and Marco Berrocal will be attending in person. So, feel free to stop by and say hello as they love interacting with WordCamp folk.
Not only is this year’s WordCamp US at an incredible location – the Gaylord is just phenomenal – you can also be a part of quite a few talks and gatherings. For example, on the 24th, the contributor day is open for everyone.
There are a lot of great talks at this year’s WordCamp US. Some of the ones that stand out most to me include:
Personally, I’m highly interested in learning more about what NASA is building and how it’ll incorporate video-on-demand. Then again, I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to anything space and science related.
Plus, being able to toss questions at Matt Mullenweg would be fun. Especially after the most recent updates in WordPress 6.3 that are a bit questionable, such as the ability to add links to Gutenberg. It now takes extra steps just to set it to open in a new window.
Anyway, from the talks available, it’s sure to be a great weekend for those joining.
The Gaylord Convention Center is located along the Potomac River just south of Washington DC. As such, it’s surrounded by some amazing attractions and a lot of US history.
One of the features in the area is the Capital Wheel, a 165-foot Ferris wheel with an amazing view of the most prolific national monuments in the country.
A few other things to keep in mind include:
As you’re visiting WordCamp US, don’t forget to stop by and say “hi” to Marco and Ericka, who will be attending on our behalf. Although the Gaylord is relatively large, they should be fairly easy to find.
I’d like to finish by thanking all of the organizers, speakers, volunteers, attendees, and sponsors who put in the time and effort to make WordCamp US something amazing. Between the locale and the talks, it’s definitely one that I wish I could attend myself.
Have a great weekend and enjoy everything National Harbor and WordCamp US have to offer.

]]>The post New Global Anycast DNS Service from GreenGeeks appeared first on GreenGeeks Blog.
]]>The new Anycast DNS platform promises faster page load times and improved reliability for websites hosted on the GreenGeeks network.
At its core, the Anycast DNS is a more efficient method of routing DNS requests.
Instead of directing requests to a random nameserver like traditional DNS, Anycast DNS routes requests to the closest server geographically, reducing latency and helping to ensure website availability during a partial outage.
With traditional DNS, all requests to a single IP address get directed to the same physical backend server.
In contrast, on the Anycast DNS platform, multiple servers are distributed globally and configured under the same IP address.
When the DNS queries are received, Anycast can route the request to the nearest server in the network. These qualities make Anycast DNS particularly useful for websites or services with a global audience, as it allows for faster and more efficient DNS resolution.
In addition, anycast DNS can provide increased resiliency and redundancy, as queries can be routed to a different server if one server goes offline.
We’ve compared the response times of our new Anycast DNS with our Legacy DNS across various cities around the world, and we’re excited to share the results with you.
Region | Anycast DNS | Traditional DNS |
Frankfurt | 0.625 ms | 92.29 ms |
Amsterdam | 0.71 ms | 91.18 ms |
London | 0.74 ms | 88.05 ms |
New York | 1.78 ms | 90.18 ms |
Dallas | 0.82 ms | 90.34 ms |
San Francisco | 1.05 ms | 123.80 ms |
Singapore | 1.71 ms | 154.29 ms |
Sydney | 0.615 ms | 187.60 ms |
Tokyo | 2.07 ms | 164.60 ms |
Bangalore | 2.065 ms | 194.15 ms |
With Anycast DNS, your website will load faster than ever!
Multiple DNS servers distributed globally mean reduced response times for all queries, reducing the load time.
Anycast DNS improves the overall reliability of your website.
If one DNS server goes down or becomes unavailable, traffic gets automatically routed to another available server.
That redundancy means your website will remain online during a partial network outage.
Since Anycast’s capacity is not limited to a single backend server, it can handle higher traffic levels without slowing down or becoming overloaded.
These benefits make Anycast DNS a dependable option for eCommerce sites or popular blogs.
Finally, Anycast DNS can help protect your website against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
By spreading traffic across multiple servers, Anycast DNS can reduce the impact of an attack if one server becomes overwhelmed with malicious traffic.
There are two simple steps to converting an existing domain on the GreenGeeks traditional DNS to the Anycast-based DNS platform:
First, you need to update the nameservers for your domain with the domain registrar to the GreenGeeks Anycast nameservers.
Second; after updating the nameservers with the domain registrar, the backend DNS zone needs to be updated to set the correct NS & SOA records in order to take full advantage of the Anycast DNS platform.
For users without custom DNS records(meaning records that you’ve manually added), you can reset the DNS Zone from the from the cPanel(or WHM) using the DNS Zone Manager. Resetting the DNS zone will rebuild the DNS zone using the default values, including the NS & SOA records.
If you have custom DNS records that need to be retained, or need to update a number of domains, submit a Support Ticket Request and the GreenGeeks’ Support Team will be glad to assist you with updating the backend DNS zone’s NS & SOA records to match the new nameservers.
Although GreenGeeks recommends switching existing domains over the GreenGeeks Anycast DNS cluster, it is not required, and you can continue to use the Legacy DNS cluster.
You can configure Private Nameservers under your domain that refers to the GreenGeeks Anycast DNS cluster and provide all the same benefits.
For more information refer to our support article on Setting up Private Nameservers.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced developer, WordCamps always has something for everyone. The best part is that WordCamp isn’t strictly about WordPress.
In fact, there are a lot of talks that can expand your knowledge about everything from marketing to understanding Core Web Vitals in Search Console.
This year, you can find talks such as:
This is just a handful of what you can find at this year’s WordCamp in Phoenix. There are really too many interesting ones to name in a quick blog post. And many of them I am ear-marking to watch remotely.
Over the years, we’ve attended or sponsored the WordCamp in Phoenix several times. And if there is one thing you can count on, it is the warm sunlight, even in the middle of winter.
The desert landscape isn’t the only interesting thing about Phoenix, though.
This year, our very own Anna Gargioni and Ericka Barboza will be attending WordCamp Phoenix. Feel free to stop by and say hello before attending any of the amazing talks that are featured this year.
I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the organizers, speakers, volunteers, sponsors, and attendees who make these camps successful. Your contributions are what make these WordCamps an amazing experience.
